Hell’s gate Naivasha National Park!
Unlock the Ultimate Hiking and Cycling Experience in Kenya
If you’re interested in hiking and cycling at Hells Gate National Park, it’s one of the best outdoor adventure destinations in Kenya and one of the few national parks in Africa where visitors can legally walk and cycle among wildlife.
🚴 Cycling at Hell’s Gate
Cycling is the park’s signature activity. You can rent a bicycle at or near the main entrance (Elsa Gate) and ride along dirt roads through dramatic volcanic scenery. The most popular route runs from Elsa Gate toward the gorge area, passing landmarks such as Fischer’s Tower and towering cliffs.
Along the ride, it’s common to see:
Zebras
Giraffes
Warthogs
Gazelles
Elands
Buffalo (keep a safe distance)
The terrain is mostly unpaved but generally manageable for riders with moderate fitness. Morning rides (7–10 a.m.) are usually the most comfortable because temperatures are cooler.
🥾 Hiking at Hell’s Gate
The park offers excellent hiking opportunities, especially through the famous gorge system. Guided walks take visitors through narrow canyons, volcanic rock formations, geothermal steam vents, and features known as “Devil’s Bedroom” and “Hell’s Kitchen.” Local guides are recommended and may be required for some sections for safety reasons.
Popular hiking highlights include:
Ol Njorowa Gorge
Fischer’s Tower (also popular for rock climbing)
Geothermal steam vents
Scenic viewpoints over the Great Rift Valley landscape
Practical Tips
Carry plenty of drinking water.
Wear sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots.
Bring sunscreen and a hat; shade is limited.
Start early to avoid midday heat.
Check gorge access conditions, especially after heavy rains, as some sections may close for safety.
How Long Should You Spend?
A typical visit combines:
Cycling: 2–3 hours
Gorge hike: 1–2 hours
Allow at least 4–5 hours for the full experience, or a full day if you want to add rock climbing or a visit to the nearby Olkaria Geothermal Spa.
For a visitor coming from Nairobi, Hell’s Gate makes an excellent day trip, located roughly 90 km away near .
